MADI: Once Upon a Time in the Future, the first graphic novel from Duncan Jones and Alex de Campi and the third instalment of what has come to be know as the MOONIVERSE (following MOON 2009, and MUTE 2018), was officially launched (and funded in under 6hrs) on Kickstarter May 19, 2020. An overwhelming success with 6,860 backers pledging a total of $366,610 when pledges closed in June 2020. Original target was $50,000.00.
Later that same year, MADI became available in 3 variants from Z2 Comics
- Standard Edition Softcover Graphic Novel
- Standard Edition Hardcover Graphic Novel
- Deluxe Edition Graphic Novel
All beautiful editions showcasing a wealth of artistic talent, but never available in digital format… until now!
Announced by Duncan Jones just over a week ago over on Bluesky
Ooo! This is nice! MADI got republished by Image Comics with a lovely new cover by the great Paolo Rivera!
And here is that lovely new cover, you may already be familiar with the work of Paolo Rivera from his stunning film noir style MUTE poster.

Speaking on Bluesky after Duncan’s announcement, co-author Alex de Campi gave us a bit more detail on what to expect from this new edition…
This new edition is possibly the loveliest we’ve done, I had support from Image to go back and fine-tune a lot of things, such as lettering, cover & spine design, improving/expanding backmatter, and creating a more holistic design. Plus a little Annie Wu art on the spine!
MADI is 304pp, paperback graphic novel, from Image Comics—19.99 from your local comic shop, bookstore, or online here at Bookshop Org… it’s an action/ sci fi thriller and can be read by 12 and up.
I know some of you were aware of the fulfillment issues we had with our previous publisher and how involved I had to be in managing that (which I had not expected, at all)—there were similar issues with the book’s physical production, and it was all VERY stressful.
I’m not talking about the artists, uniformly they were all a joy to work with and very on time et cetera, but on the category of “things which are the publisher’s job to deal with”. So it’s been a joy to be back at Image, who remain the most together/professional publisher I’ve dealt with, bar none.
I’m also just delighted by our spine design, which looks clear and compelling from across the room—something I strive for in all my books.
Annnnd we have a digital edition of MADI now, something that never existed before and is new to this Image reprint!
Shoutout to Wes and Drew and the entire Image team who make books better every day in a million tiny ways, and Duncan and all the MADI artists, ilu all so much 💕 and our book is still amazing.
There was also some talk around the title change you may have noticed on the Image Comics site… MADI TP, VOL. 1 so this is not the end of MADI or further entries in the MOONIVERSE? According to Alex…
We want to do a prequel but Duncan’s just coming off film production and I’m exhausted so it’s just a case of us both having a moment to breathe But this story is complete in and of itself in the one book
Softback copies of this new edition are available now, check your favourite local or online stores. Picked mine up from the fine folk in the UK at Forbidden Planet.
Digital available now on Apple Books, Amazon Kindle.
