Source Code: Opening Box Office & Reactions From William Gibson & Mark Kermode

Duncan Jones’ Source Code opened in Canada, Philippines, UK & USA on Friday 1st April and had a great weekend according to US & UK box office figures.

Figures from Box Office Mojo in the US show Source Code opening weekend of $14,812,094. UK Digital Spy reported today that Source Code just missed the top spot in the UK Box Office by a mere £86,079 pulling in £1,306,661 to which I am happy to have contributed my hard earned pocket money.

And it looks like those figures are likely to grow steadily through the week as fantastic word of mouth and recommendations continue online with feedback on Twitter on the #SOURCECODE tag steadily building after the weekend screenings. Lot’s of wonderful feedback directly to Duncan on there as well.

When it comes to Sci-Fi there can hardly be any greater recommendation that you go see Source Code than that of author William Gibson who simply stated.

William Gibson Loved Source Code! - Twitter

Which I guess kind of blew Duncan away, as his response to those three little words was:

“Im rubbing my eyes seeing William Gibson tweet that he liked both my movies. Gibson brought SciFi into the 21st century for me.

In my mind, William Gibson is to my generation what PKD was to his.”

And there was more praise from UK film critic Mark Kermode on BBC Radio 5 Live on the afternoon of the Friday April 1st opening where Mark chose Source Code as his film of the week, making it 2 for 2 for Duncan with Dr Kermode as you may recall, awarding Duncan Best Director for MOON at the Kermode’s in March 2010.

I’ll be going again this weekend with some friends who will be going for the first time, it really is the kind of film that requires repeat viewing, which appears to be the case for many that have been already, with more word of mouth and fantastic reviews, there is hope, that we may beat the bunny (Hop) this coming weekend, Duncan has a contingency plan though, should it be necessary.

“Think we have a chance of beating the bunny this week, or am i going to have to add a scene where Jake poops jelly beans?”

Thanks to all that have been out to see Source Code already, please pass on the good word to family, friends, colleagues & total strangers on the bus, it’s great to have a new film out there that causes discussion & debate after viewing, that isn’t a reboot, or a sequel, or a prequel, from a Director who cares very much about the audience’s experience. If you want more Duncan Jones films, then tell the studios and the cinemas in the easiest way possible, go out, buy some tickets, and enjoy Source Code :)

New Source Code & MOON Posters By Greg Stekelman

Duncan Jones’ MOON and Source Code have inspired many artists to come up with posters, as alternatives to the official, studio produced promotional material.

None have quite realised the full combination of emotional impact and humour, that are at the heart of much of Duncan’s work. That is until now, as we present the work of writer and illustrator Greg Stekelman, tweeted to Duncan this evening.

The artist states “I tried not to give away too many key plot points. I also think Gertie might have worked quite well with Kevin Costner. The two “O”s are smiling and frowning, representing the duality of man, and the bittersweet ambivalence of Sam Bell.”

Source Code Screening Reaction

Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright in Duncan Jones' Source Code. April 1st 2011

As the April 1st release date for Source Code draws closer, some lucky people are getting to see advance screenings, one such lucky chap, Ryan Hamelin took the time to drop Director Duncan Jones a twitter reaction, which has only served to increase the anticipation:

Just got out of a screening of Source Code. You may have made one of my favorite “mindfuck” movies of all time. Hope I get the chance to meet you if the press tour comes to NYC, if only to shake your hand. Congratulations sir .

I mean, you combined all of my favorite film things. Time bending, second chances, sci-fi twists, and nailed the 3rd act. If I ever get a chance to make a movie like that it’d be a dream come true. Looking forward to a second viewing

A busy day of movie viewing ahead for Ryan, but sounds like Source Code has made quite an impression:

If you enjoy movies, trust me, you will enjoy Source Code. The best ride I’ve had in a movie theater since Inception. Definitely go see it.

Up next on the queue either The Adjustment Bureau or I Am Number Four. Interested if either can make me forget Source Code even a little bit.

Source Code opens US / UK April 1st, with worldwide premier at SXSW on March 11th 2011.

Source Code Complete!

Confirmation from Director Duncan Jones that his 2nd feature ‘Source Code‘ starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga & Jeffrey Wright is now complete and ready to roll :)

From Duncan’s twitter feed:

Duncan Jones - Source Code Complete 13th Jan 2011Filming started in February 2010 (here’s where it all began) and completed on April 29th 2010, we’ve had plenty of updates since then, all Source Code related pages here should you fancy a mooch.

While we await the final word from the Director, here’s the trailer for ‘Source Code’ which will premier at SXSW on March 19th, in Austin Texas. Opening in the US on April 1st 2011, and UK (we believe) April 22nd.

Chris Bacon Replaces Clint Mansell to Score Source Code

Chris Bacon To Score Source Code

Chris Bacon

As reported last night, Clint Mansell will no longer be scoring Source Code due to scheduling conflicts. Replacing Clint will be new, up and coming composer Chris Bacon

Chris comes highly recommended as confirmed by Duncan’s tweet in response to a question from @TwinMadeFilms on Twitter:

“very talented young guy called Chris Bacon, who was recommended by my editor, the legendary Paul Hirsch.”

Sad to see Clint won’t be working on Source Code now, after a stunning first collaboration with Duncan on MOON, but with such a glowing recommendation, and trust in Duncan’s descision to go with Chris, I’m confident we’re on track for something special.

As you will see from Chris’s IMDB entry, he has a wealth of experience working on some very high profile projects such as King Kong (2005), Blood Diamond (2006), I Am Legend (2007) and The Dark Knight (2008) and as main composer of 10 films including the Disney documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty (2009), Alpha and Omega (2010) and Gnomeo and Juliet (2011)

Good luck with the gig, Chris! :)

Clint Mansell Will Not Be Scoring Source Code

A busy few days stretch out in front of Source Code Director Duncan Jones, currently attending the recording of the films score with a 70 piece orchestra in LA.

He has announced via Twitter though, that Clint Mansell, who scored Duncan’s first feature MOON, will not be scoring Source Code as previously confirmed.

“Unfortunately we weren’t able to work out a schedule so Clint could do the score in the end. He has been a very busy bee.”

We were all obviously excited to hear that Clint & Duncan would be working together again, but as the recording of the score is up and running already, I’m sure all is in hand to give a nice bit of the old aural.

Will update as soon as we get further details on the score as it is recorded.

UPDATE Further details from Badass Digest confirming scheduling conflicts, and details on new composer Chris Bacon. Check Badass for further details.

Source Code News Roundup: US Release Moved Forward & A Surprise Cameo Teased…

Time for a Source Code news roundup folks. First up we have good news for those of you in the USA, Source Code release has now been moved forward to open on April 1st 2011 from the original April 14th date, 2 weeks less to wait. The official site and Facebook groups have both been updated to reflect this. As far as we know, still on for a March 11th UK release as announced earlier in Empire magazine.

We’ve also had a new official still from the Source Code Facebook page this week featuring an intense moment between Christina (Michelle Monaghan) & Colter Stevens (Jakes Gyllenhall) suggest you ‘Like’ that page if you want to keep up with any exclusive content they pop out during the build up to release.

Michelle Monaghan & Jake Gyllenhall - Source CodeMoving onto Twitter news now, and just when you thought you knew plenty about Source Code from the trailer Director, Duncan Jones hits us with

Just talked to top secret surprise “cameo” in Source Code… what a lovely… man or woman… or animal. Hah! I give you NOTHING!

Plenty of responses to that one, majority thinking we could see Sam Rockwell popping up, but it’s anyone’s guess, comments section below if you have any thoughts on that one.

Finally (thanks to the lovely WDW), a few words from Duncan when Entertainment Weekly suggested that reaction to the Source Code trailer, had compared it to brain teasers like Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’

I am a big fan of Christopher Nolan’s and would love to be put in the same category as him someday.

And, despite the train-exploding-theme of Source Code

The tone of the film is quite light… We get to see Jake play an action-man leading role but still have that little sense of humour to him – almost like an Indiana Jones.

So there ya have it, we’ll let you know as soon as there are any updates, which may, or may not be sooner than you think…

Poll: What do you think is the best 30 sec clip of dialogue in MOON?

MOON: Sam Rockwell & Ducan Jones discuss the best line of dialogue

Can you help out MOON Director Duncan Jones in choosing the best clip of dialogue from the film? Duncan’s put the feelers out on twitter earlier:

Alright you lot. Here’s a question for those that liked Moon… what do you think the best bit of dialogue is in the film. A 30 sec clip.

We’re gonna try one of these new fangled poll thingies, cast your votes, and maybe we’ll get to find out exactly what it’s needed for soon…

MOON VFX Guru Gavin Rothery Reveals Duncan Jones Was A Badass Space Murderer

If you’re not already a member of our Facebook page, or following us on Twitter, there is a good chance you have been missing out on some fantastic behind the scenes revelations on the making of MOON.

MOON Concept Artist & VFX Supervisor Gavin Rothery has started posting up some rather wonderful snippets about his experiences of making MOON, starting at the birth of GERTY, and continuing through, so far, to the revealing of Director Duncan Jones and Co-Producer Nicky Bentham as eventually unseen murdering space bastards.

We even find out that the MOON crew, were the crew of the Eliza rescue ship, as you can see below. There’s Gavin on the left as the captain, 1st Assistant Director Mick Ward in the middle and Director of Photography Gary Shaw on the right. I shan’t reveal anymore here…for now, head over to Gav’s site, and fill your boots :)
