Happy Birthday MOON

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOON

Duncan Jones Directorial feature debut MOON starring the Mighty Sam Rockwell went on general release in the United States on June 12th 2009, initially opening at selected theatres in New York and LA, making today the 1st anniversary :)

I thought it only right and proper we should mark this occasion on the ole blog, and celebrate what has become an instant Sci-Fi Cult Classic, comfortably joining the ranks of those films that influenced it in the first place (Silent Running, Outland, 2001: A Space Odyssey).

Those influences and themes are plain to see.The effects of isolation, loneliness & solitude, the questioning of identity, perceptions of reality and human existence, exploitation of blue collar workers by faceless global corporations, and in the end, escape, inspiring hope through breaking free of routine and manipulation. Above everything, I think MOON is a very human story, that has found an audience with fans of all genres.

Since release, MOON has gone on to travel around the Earth, think we caught most of the releases as the year has passed, gaining many awards along the way, including:

We even had a little knock at trying to get an Academy Award nomination for Sam Rockwell’s stunning performance as Sam Bell.

As each glass of wine is sunk in MOON’s honour as I write this, there is more danger of a drunken ramble, so, I’ll cut it short, and simply thank each and every one of you for supporting MOON over the last year, all of you who have bought cinema tickets, all of you who have bought MOON on Blu-Ray and DVD, and everyone who joined in the Sam Rockwell Oscar campaign :)

First Birthday it may be, but the journey continues, as MOON is scheduled for release in France on DVD & Blu-Ray next week, and a nice big theatrical release in Germany in July this year.

See MOON at Glastonbury 2010

The world famous Glastonbury festival takes place between 23rd > 27th June 2010 at Worthy Farm, Pilton, Glastonbury, UK. 30 Ninjas – Jake Gyllenhaal & Duncan Jones v Mike Newell

Post title sounds like the result of an evening out on the beer in the far East. In actual fact it refers to Julina Tatlocks exclusive interview with ‘Source Code’ and ‘Prince of Persia’ star Jake Gyllehaal over at the 30 NINJAS site.

Obviously Mr Gyllenhaal is busy on the global promo trail for ‘Prince of Persia’ at the moment, but good to see plenty of good words for Duncan Jones and ‘Source Code’ along the way. A small extract of the interview:

JULINA: Tell me about the different styles of Duncan Jones, who directed you in Source Code, and Mike Newell.

JAKE: Oh my gosh, every director than I have had the pleasure to work with has been so different in their style. So Mike Newell, just physically … they both happen to be British, but Duncan spent a lot of time growing up in the States and all over the world so he has a different sort of sensibility than Mike. Well, Mike is like six foot five, and Duncan is like five ten or something, so [laughs] that is one major difference. And in a way, their sizes mimic their styles, because Mike is very robust and dramatic in his approach and he’s like (in a gruff British voice), “Oh yes, my dear boy, it’s fantastic,” and there’s always this sort of energy to it. Duncan really creates this space that is much more quiet, and I would say that there is a serenity to the way he directs, and to me it’s fascinating that the two of them could not be more different. That’s actually a really good question. They had two different beasts [to direct], you know? Mike had a movie where there are just so many elements that he had to balance, and I learned from him a really important lesson that every actor should know; he said, “You know what I look at more than the monitor?,” and I said “No, what Mike?” And he pointed to his watch. When I asked ”Really?,” he said, “You never get all the things you want as a director, and you’re always chasing time.” Any actor who is in sync with their director knows you want to try to give your director everything that they want within the day. And that’s something that I really learned with Mike. It is something that I don’t think that actors really know: how much a director is dealing with. So when I went to work with Duncan I brought that mentality with me, and it was like, “What do we need? Did we get that? OK, what do you need from me? Let’s go.”

Head over to 30NINJAS for the full interview, and Jake’s thoughts on working with Duncan. And see previous posts on this ole blog for more on ‘Source Code

Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell in MOON

Article over on the BBC has just announced Sam Rockwell has been named Best Actor in the 2010 Richard Attenborough Film Awards, for his portrayal of Sam Bell in MOON.

Speaking of working with MOON Director Duncan Jones, the BBC quotes Sam as saying:

MOON Japan Site Live Ready For April Release

Moon Otoko

Happy days Japan as we have received confirmation that MOON will be opening over there, April 10th 2010.

The Japanese MOON site has now gone live, and press screenings will also be occuring during Feb to promote the release. Not much currently on show, but that will change as the release approaches, so bookmark it now in readyness, click on the image above, or >>HERE<<

Please forgive, but my Japanese is a bit rusty these days, so a wee explanation and further details from our honourable correspondent out in Japan @hip_priest_kobe

OK, the Japanese title is:

月に囚われた男

In English it means Man caught in the moon

Caught 囚 kind of give the emotion of imprisonment, which does not come across clearly in an English translation.

Maybe…..Man imprisoned in the Moon is closer, but literally translated it would be caught, or trapped.

Movie roadshow from April, starting at Ebisu Garden place cinema Tokyo.

Which makes it all the more intriguing to those that have not seen the film yet, and have avoided spoilers :)

Vote MOON for St Patrick’s Day London Screening

jameson cult film club

How does a St Patrick’s Day screening of Duncan Jones’ MOON starring Sam Rockwell, at the Royal Institute in London sound? Good? Exactly what we thought as well when Ben Mortimer pointed us in the direction of this vote off for the Jameson Cult Film Club >>HERE<<

As you can see from the above image, there is a public vote between ‘MOON’, ‘Donny Darko’, and the 1953 ‘War of the Worlds’ all you have to do, to ensure that it is ‘MOON’ that you want to see, is head over to the site, cast your vote before the closing date of January 25th 2010. Ticket registration will open on 17th February 2010, the venue will be decked out suitably for the winning film, so this promises to be a very special evening for the MOON fans (should we win) as the Jameson Cult Film Club says:

Together with our friends at Empire we have come up with a choice of three cult Sci-Fi movies, to screen at the Royal Institute, in London on St Patrick’s Day, March 17.

Many of you will recognise the venue from their Christmas Lectures, which are televised from the lecture hall every year. What you may not realise is that this fantastic venue has also been the home to some of the most prestigious scientific minds in the UK (including Michael Faraday), and some of the most important scientific discoveries of the last two decades were made within its very walls.

The venue will be dressed to complement the winning film; you will be surrounded by science wonders such as Faraday’s working lab in the basement for pre-screening drinks, before heading up into the famous lecture hall for the screening itself, followed by an after-party in the upstairs rooms of the Institute.

Tippety top night by the sound of it, so, if you want to see MOON, get on over and vote now.

MOON Selling out after US Release?

MOON Sold Out?

Last in the rack Twitpic at Best Buy from Laurence Reichman

Duncan Jones’ MOON starring Sam Rockwell, was released on Blu-Ray and DVD in the US & Canada last Tuesday 12th January 2010, and although we have no sales figures yet, from the comments we’ve seen over on Twitter, it seems sales are brisk, and in some cases, it is sold out at branches of major US retailers such as Target and Best Buy. Check out these comments:

Easy day so far. Been trying to buy Moon and Hurt Locker Blu-Ray but it’s sold out. This is bittersweet.

@ManMadeMoon Went to 2 stores at lunch to buy Blu-Ray MOON for my bro’s birthday – BOTH SOLD OUT!! Frustrated/happy #SamRockwellOscar

From Robert Tarr

From Melissa Gill

And this from respected Movie Journalist Scott Weinberg

The big Best Buy in NE Phily = Totally sold out of MOON.

Hopefully all those lovely Academy Voters getting out early to see what all the fuss is about. Not too shabby for a little British Indie Sci-Fi film, not too shabby at all. Also nice to see it flying high in the Tower top 100 Blu-Rays

There is an awful lot of MOON love out there, especially from people that did not get a chance to see it’s limited theatrical release.

MOON Inspires Fan Art and Review

Whilst mooching about on Twitter yesterday (a very rare occurrence I can assure you) I noticed that film lover, David Sugarman, had tweeted a pic to MOON Director Duncan Jones ( @ManMadeMoon ), so I thought I’d share it with you, I also asked David to tell us about the pic & his thoughts on MOON:

David Sugarman's 'Sam Bell - MOON'

Moon is a film that means a huge amount to me. Science-fiction is so often divided into two camps: one high and intellectual, distanced from the characters; or simply brainless action. Moon delivers the intelligence, the human ethical fallibility, the questions of progress and technology. It also engages with the character(s) of Sam Bell so that I care vastly more about him than I can recall any other space-based sci-fi character meaning to me.

While I cannot claim to have seen every film released in 2009, Sam Rockwell’s performance is almost certainly one of, if not the best screen performances I have ever seen. It’s not possible to discuss this film without raving about it and sounding generally too enthusiastic for it to be genuine, and a huge part of those ravings revolve around Sam’s acting.

Good luck to the whole campaign,
David Sugarman (@ShugZ)
