MUTE To Begin Filming In Berlin Wednesday 28th September 2016

MUTE - Duncan JonesHurrah! Hurray! and all sorts of leaping about and cheering ensued this morning as Duncan Jones announced via his Twitter account that MUTE will begin filming in Berlin next Wednesday, 28th September and also shared some beautiful concept artwork originally published in the May 2016 edition of Empire film magazine.

For those that are not aware of MUTE yet, here’s the deal

Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca. Leo Beiler (Alexander Skarsgard), a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and she’s disappeared. But when Leo’s search takes him deeper into the city’s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Paul Rudd) seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo can’t tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.

MUTE takes place in the same cinematic universe as MOON, potentially being the second in a MOONIVERSE trilogy.

Wishing all the very best to Duncan, Stuart and the whole gang 🙂

Scan to the bottom of the release and you’ll notice it also confirms Duncan will be working again with Clint Mansell and Sam Rockwell who may reprise his role as Sam Bell from MOON, hurrah!

LOS ANGELES (November 3, 2015) – Paul Rudd (ANT-MAN) will be joined by Alexander Skarsgard (TARZAN,TRUE BLOOD) in the title role, for the sci-fi thriller MUTE, which will be directed by BAFTA-winning director Duncan Jones (WARCRAFT, SOURCE CODE, MOON).

Director Duncan Jones said: “I’ve been working towards making MUTE for 12 years now. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that we’re finally going to shoot this utterly unique film. The fact that I get to make it with Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd makes it all the more exciting! MUTE is a film that will last. It is unlike any other science fiction being made today.”

Lotus Entertainment’s Jim Seibel said: “We’re very excited to work with Duncan and Stuart. They are an immensely talented team that will surely deliver an exciting and cinematic film. Director Duncan Jones is a true visionary filmmaker and the real deal. It’s his caliber of talent that makes storytelling both visually exciting and captivating.”

Producer Stuart Fenegan said: “Bill, Jim and Ara share the same passion I do for building another vision of the future with Duncan. I look forward to going on this journey with them, and also reuniting with Sam Rockwell and composer Clint Mansell… can’t do sci-fi without Sam and Clint!”

MUTE News This Week? “ZOLTAR HAS SPOKEN”

While we await the big news on WARCRAFT from BlizzCon 2015 this coming Saturday (trailer maybe? Huh? Maybe?) We may also soon be getting news on another Duncan Jones project, MUTE.

There are a few clues, Duncan’s response to a question on that very subject this afternoon from @HazelMaysDays

That coupled with the fact that Duncan has recently returned from a location scouting trip to Berlin (MUTE is planned to be set in a future Berlin) and this mysterious and rare tweet from Duncan’s producer partner at Liberty Films Stuart Fenegan yesterday

As usual, the best place to hear the latest on WARCRAFT, MUTE and any other projects Duncan and the gang are working on is by following Duncan over on Twitter where you’ll find him as @ManMadeMoon

MUTE: Duncan Jones’ Own Don Quixote May Get Made BEFORE Warcraft Release!

Dark Horse Presents Duncan Jones & Glenn Fabry - MUTE SDCC2013

Aah MUTE, a dark Sci-Fi film Duncan Jones has been trying to get made since 2009. A love letter to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, a film set in the same cinematic universe as Duncan’s highly acclaimed debut feature MOON. A film fans of Duncan’s work have been yearning for since hearing about it back in 2009. A film that may now get made BEFORE WARCRAFT is released on June 10th 2016.

Speaking exclusively to Empire last night at the opening preview evening of SDCC15 where WARCRAFT is taking centre stage, Duncan said the words we’ve been wanting to hear for a very long time:-

“Dark Horse and Glenn Fabry and myself have been working on the graphic novel for MUTE for years now – literally years – and there’s a very good chance, if I can squeeze it in in these 11 months, that you’ll see the film before you see the graphic novel.”

“It’s 11 months to sneak in my little indie sci-fi before Warcraft comes out, I got Moon done in 11 months.”

That MUTE graphical novel first announced in 2013 is in progress and as ever will be “ready when it’s ready”, when the legendary Glenn Fabry has finished the artwork.

Duncan has often compared the attempts to get MUTE made to those made by one of his cinematic heroes Terry Gilliam with his version of Don Quixote, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Well it looks like Gilliam will finally be getting his film made. Maybe, if we’re very lucky, Duncan will finally get to make MUTE. Cross ALL the thingies!

What Next For Duncan Jones?… Not Star Trek 3

Deadline posted an exclusive last night on a list of five potential directors for Star Trek 3 after the recent departure of Roberto Orci.

One of those names, unsurprisingly, was our own Duncan Jones. Duncan moved quickly to pass on the opportunity however and confirmed on Twitter last night:-

One of these projects remains a mystery for now, the other we know will be MUTE which is also being adapted as a graphic novel featuring incredible artwork by  Glenn Fabry, Duncan provided an update on that last night too:-

As for getting MUTE in front of a camera, it’s something Duncan has been working towards for quite a while (over 10 years). Something he has often joked about being his Don Quixote comparing it to the long drawn out journey Terry Gilliam has been on trying to get his version of Cervantes’ classic novel The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha made, an experience painfully captured in the documentary of the failed attempt to film it, Lost In La Mancha.

While we wait for more news on exactly what Duncan will be up to next, work continues on WARCRAFT post production getting it ready for release March 16th 2016.

Want a MUTE Print Signed by Duncan Jones?

Duncan Jones served a double whammy after sneaking into San Diego Comic-Con last month dressed as a luchador. Presenting not only a surprise teaser for his next film WARCRAFT, but also announcing a graphic novel of the long anticipated MUTE in collaboration with award winning British comic artist Glenn Fabry and Dark Horse Comics.

Those attending SDCC were not only present to hear the news, but were also able to pick up a print of two pages from MUTE at a signing session with Duncan. We all gazed on enviously, I pleaded with Duncan to slip a few down his kecks (trousers for you lot not from around these parts) and…he bloody well did!

I’d be happy to hoard them away, but Duncan has gone and squiggled all over them, so I’m going to give some to…maybe YOU!
