Duncan Jones Directs New Commercial For Virgin Money

We teased this earlier in the week, and now we can reveal a new commercial from MOON & Source Code Director Duncan Jones. Filmed in London at Shepperton studios, UK, in October 2011, this new commercial for Virgin Money was premièred on Sunday 8th January 2012 at 20:15 on UK television channel ITV.

As you will see, Duncan’s fondness for utilising old school techniques returns with the use of model miniatures. This isn’t the only connection with Duncan’s debut feature MOON though, as the trip back over from Los Angeles to direct the commercial also included a return to the same studios where MOON was filmed in 2009, as Duncan tweeted at the time:

At Shepperton studios! Just been wandering around the old Moon sound stage. In there again shooting a commercial! Feels weird. :)

Commenting on the commercial this evening Duncan said:

Great fun working with some of the same model miniature peeps I did Moon with!

Anyone wondering what the two pieces of music in the commercial are, Starts with Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, then fades into Outlands by Daft Punk from TRON: Legacy.

The Record Club & Shipley Film Society Present MOON & Hunky Dory 22nd January

The Record Club & Shipley Film Society Present MOON, Hnky Dory & PWEIAnyone near Shipley, West Yorkshire has a unique opportunity to attend a great evening of film and music.

The Record Club along with Shipley Film Society are holding an evening of film & music on Sunday, January 22nd. A screening of Duncan Jones award winning 2009 debut MOON starring Sam Rockwell, will be followed by a full play through of David Bowie’s 1971 classic album Hunky Dory (celebrating it’s 40th Birthday!) on vinyl :)

The Record Club were inspired by reading an article on the BBC News site on record clubs and the idea of returning to listening to vinyl LPs all the way through, as originally intended by the recording artiste. Shipley Film Society’s aim is to bring together like minded people for film viewing and discussion over a few drinks afterwards. Combine the two and you have what promises to be a wonderful evening of film & music with a bunch of great people to boot!

As well as MOON & Hunky Dory, the evening will also be mixing in associated music including records from MOON score composer Clint Mansell’s former band Pop Will Eat Itself. Shipley Film Society have also requested that anyone that owns 7″ vinyl copies of Chesney Hawkes ‘The One and Only’ and Katrina & The Waves ‘Walking On Sunshine’ bring them along too. If you’ve seen MOON you’ll know why, if not…

When: Sunday, January 22nd 2012 @ 19:00

Where: The Kirkgate Centre, Shipley, BD18 3RR

Full details at The Record Club site, and the Shipley Film Society site.

MOON: Time To Remember Poster

I was just thinking we hadn’t had a nice poster for a while, when this one arrives from Ricky Plows via Twitter to MOON Director Duncan Jones.

@PikeyHouse MOON: Time To Remember PosterRicky was kind enough to provide some detail on the design (cus I asked, like) Which I think just makes it even nicer.

The silhouette is made up of Sams memorys from earth. Hes looking into his own eyes and seeing the same memories.

They are positioned to make an hourglass, representing his time left on the moon. Thanks for taking an interest :)

Ricky has also provided a larger version over on his on-line portfolio, along with another MOON poster :)

New Beverly Q&A with Duncan Jones Sam Rockwell & Stuart Fenegan

MOON & Source Code Double Bill at the New Beverly, Los Angeles, CADuncan Jones presented a MOON & Source Code double bill at the New Beverley Cinema, Los Angeles on the 18th & 19th of November, featuring an introduction of each film, and a Q&A with Duncan and his producer Stuart Fenegan, hosted by Julia Marchese. What the audience on the 18th were not aware of, was the surprise appearance of Sam Bell himself, Sam Rockwell.

For those of us unable to attend, I found a few snippets of the Q&A, and was putting together a post for you to get a flavour of the event. Then I found this…

Some fantastic insight into the process of making MOON there, and also some hints towards where Duncan & Stuart are heading with what sounds like a Sci-Fi trilogy of ‘Mute’ ‘MOON’ and ‘…’ (that’s the last title we managed to get out of Duncan for film three)

And to top it all off, and maintain the British connection, there’s a nice portion of Edgar Wright at the end presenting Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Fantastic work there by Random Dreamer Studios :)

As you may have caught Duncan mention there in the Q&A, Julia at the New Beverly is supporting a campaign to fight for the survival of 35mm film projection in cinemas, please take a moment to read Julia’s post, and sign the petition here.
