Duncan Jones Continues To Grow With Source Code

Before I get into the details of Duncan Jones’ sophomore opus, Source Code, I must relate to you the circumstances in which the movie was experienced.

*It all started yesterday afternoon, as I was sitting on a bench outside the Austin Convention Center, soaking up some sun before the madness began. There were canvassers walking around, handing out some nifty Source Code hats and t-shirts, which we may have available for you here.

Source Code Swag

I tweeted out a picture and next thing I knew, I was getting special access to the pre-premiere media party, hosted by Nokia and Summit Entertainment. There I got to meet Jones and his spectacular and incredibly artistic girlfriend Rodene Ronquillo and both were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I’m so very grateful for the opportunity to have met them.

Leaving the party, I donned my Selk’Bag (from Moon infamy) and entered the premiere to curious looks and many a picture from the odd filmgoer.

Not wanting to miss the film, I first made my way to the loo. Upon stepping up to the urinal I had a conversation that went something like this:
Man (with British accent): This isn’t a conversation that I usually have at a urinal but wow, I can’t believe you’re wearing a Selk’Bag! Nice.
Me: I can’t believe that you know what it is.
Man: I should, I produced Moon.
Me: Well then, I’m going to wash my hands and then shake yours.
Stuart Fenegan: (Laughs).
Random Other Guy: (Laughs).
(pause)(silence)
Me: And there’s that awkward silence. *

So needless to say, it was a fun, light environment in the sold out Paramount Theatre when the film got rolling, even after Jones called me out in the audience as being from Lunar Industries. Having screened Moon in Austin a few years back, Jones seemed to have developed quite a fan following, as the opening credit cheers reached its pinnacle during his name.

As for the film itself, it’s safe to say that Jones continues to establish his dominance as an auteur in an industry that can so easily be degraded into merely a play for profits. Having been given a more studio equivalent budget, Jones knows how to make the money and the talent work for him.

Brought on the project by Gyllenhaal, the two have quickly developed a rapport that will likely spill into cinema in the future and Jones had no problem getting the fantastic actor to open himself up to such a quirky and yet complex character. Gyllenhaal is quickly working his way into the supreme echelon of acting and certainly breathes refreshing life into a film that could be easily, and unfairly, categorized as another action film – which it certainly is not.

Bolstered by fantastic acting from Vera Farmiga, Michelle Monaghan, and Jeffrey Wright, the film itself is tense, claustrophobic, emotional, and based upon the inherent fear and anxiety that many Americans in urban areas have been experiencing in a post 9/11 landscape. Terrorism is the premise behind the story, but it is merely one of a few well executed plot lines, which proves Jones’ growth as a director.

While Moon was largely focused around a single plot line and it’s progression, Source Code expertly intertwines multiple threads, bringing them all to a head without missing a beat. Jones uses close-ups and tight angles to exacerbate the tension of the film while simultaneously infusing a plethora of humor to defuse and yet enhance the drama of the situation.

Creating an excellent Sci-Fi film that can appease both mainstream audiences and technological and quantum mechanics enthusiasts alike is a feat in itself, and Source Code proves that Jones’ filmmaking prowess, knack for telling beautiful stories, and eye for working a budget will firmly establish Jones amongst the must see directors in the medium today.

The man has longevity in film and will soon be bankable as an excellent media push by Summit Entertainment, including an interactive game, will have people flocking to see this superb movie. Where Sony failed with Moon, Summit will succeed with Source Code and I fully expect to see the name Duncan Jones attached to many a film in the near future.

Certainly get yourself to a cinema when Source Code hits and support an excellent film and a soon-to-be prolific director. The more money this endeavor makes, the more work Jones will get. We all want to see Mute become a reality and we all need to help to make it happen.

Source Code: SXSW Premiere Q&A

Source Code World Premier - Paramount by Sarah Wallace

We may not have been able to attend last nights SXSW Source Code premiere at the Paramount in Austin, TX. But thanks to the eagle eyed wonder that is WDW, we do have a snippet of the Q&A with Director Duncan Jones, writer Ben Ripley, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga & Michelle Monaghan.

There’s a wonderful chemistry between them, and great humour, I particularly like the suggestion from Jake, that Duncan tried to invest as much of the production as possible with a British flavour.

There are very minor spoilers in this, not plot wise, and not many, just the one, and only, so if you want to stay free of anything that may potentially reduce the impact of certain elements of the film, stay away from that play button…

Source Code - April 1st 2011

Ok folks, we’re going to try a little live streaming here from SXSW 2011 and hope that the lovely people over there will be covering the premiere of Duncan Jones’ Source Code in Austin, Texas this evening.

For all in the UK, Austin is GMT -6, so with the event starting at 19:00 Austin time, we’re looking at 01:00 UK (apologies for UK bias, but that’s about all my small brain can handle at the moment)

So, pull up a chair, pop the kettle on (or crack open the bubbly) and gaze in awe as we wait on tenterhooks for the chance to join in virtually with Director Duncan Jones, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga and Michelle Monaghan.

Source Code: Change The Past – Save The Future

We are just days away from the Source Code premier at SXSW this coming Friday, March 11th, and things are really heating up on the promotion front.

Large billboards are popping up around LA (would love a pic if anyone spots one). Duncan Jones will be joined by stars Jake Gyllenhaal & Michelle Monaghan to take part in a panel at SXSW on Saturday 12th March, before whizzing off on a 6 stop promotional tour of advance screenings with Q&A. And as you may have seen already Summit Entertainment have released a brand new UK Source Code poster!

And now, a second TV spot, highlighting the “Change The Past, Save The Future” strap line.

Advance screenings are already taking place of course for the press, to co-ordinate reviews online, and in print with the April 1st release date, some lovely feedback coming in on twitter includes:

“SOURCE CODE marks a second home run for @ManMadeMoon. A heady sci-fi film infused with wonderful popcorn entertainment & heart.”

“Source Code is your typical sci-fi if by “science” you mean “totally” and by “fiction” you mean “kicks your ass”

“Source Code is exactly the sort of movie you hope someone as smart as Duncan Jones would make, if given a budget.”

“SOURCE CODE is fucking smart. Blockbuster pacing, but still that same great Duncan Jones understanding of sci-fi. Well played @manmademoon.”

All getting rather exciting. We’ve got a man on the spot at SXSW for the premier on Friday, so hopefully we’ll have some good stuff for you over the weekend :)

Source Code: Making Of Featurette

We were alerted to a mahoosive chunk of interview footage for Source Code earlier today by the ever vigilant WDW.

Featuring Director Duncan Jones, writer Ben Ripley, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright, the footage is now edited down into a great making of Source Code featurette, by those wonderful people over at Making Of, who you may recall have some fantastic insights into the making of MOON also.

What is very clear from all this, is how much fun everyone seems to have had during the whole process, and how flexible Duncan was in allowing a great cast scope to do what they do best, and also how pleased they all seem to be with the results. Jake especially, having decided he wanted to work with Duncan 2 minutes into watching MOON.

And if you enjoyed all that, Making Of also have over 13 minutes of on set footage (although be warned, there may be spoilers in here!)

Source Code premiers in just over a week at SXSW in Austin, Texas. General release on the 1st of April. Can’t wait!

SXSW Straight From the Source (Code)

Source Code Poster 2011

The world premier of Duncan Jones’ mind bending, time travel thriller Source Code opens this years SXSW Film Conference & Festival March 11 – 19, 2011 in Austin, Texas. A welcome return to the site of great success in 2009 for Duncan’s first feature MOON.

Speaking to Erik Davis in this months SXSWORLD Duncan explains the attraction of the festival:

“For me, SXSW is so much more about fans and , generally, film lovers who may not neccessarily be involved in the ‘industry’, but who care abut film as much as anyone else.

They’ve got real lives; real jobs, and this is just something they have a real passion for. It doesn’t feel ‘industry’. These people are going to see it because they want to, not because they have to.”

As well as presenting the premier of Source Code, Duncan will also be joined by cast members Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan at a panel on Saturday the 12th of March ‘SXSW Straight From the Source (Code)’ A blessing as there was a time when the marketing of his films was down to Duncan, and Duncan alone.
