Aah MUTE, a dark Sci-Fi film Duncan Jones has been trying to get made since 2009. A love letter to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, a film set in the same cinematic universe as Duncan’s highly acclaimed debut feature MOON. A film fans of Duncan’s work have been yearning for since hearing about it back in 2009. A film that may now get made BEFORE WARCRAFT is released on June 10th 2016.
Speaking exclusively to Empire last night at the opening preview evening of SDCC15 where WARCRAFT is taking centre stage, Duncan said the words we’ve been wanting to hear for a very long time:-
“Dark Horse and Glenn Fabry and myself have been working on the graphic novel for MUTE for years now – literally years – and there’s a very good chance, if I can squeeze it in in these 11 months, that you’ll see the film before you see the graphic novel.”
“It’s 11 months to sneak in my little indie sci-fi before Warcraft comes out, I got Moon done in 11 months.”
That MUTE graphical novel first announced in 2013 is in progress and as ever will be “ready when it’s ready”, when the legendary Glenn Fabry has finished the artwork.
Duncan has often compared the attempts to get MUTE made to those made by one of his cinematic heroes Terry Gilliam with his version of Don Quixote, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Well it looks like Gilliam will finally be getting his film made. Maybe, if we’re very lucky, Duncan will finally get to make MUTE. Cross ALL the thingies!
As you will know if you follow Duncan Jones on Twitter, he is rather active and chatty most of the time, but rarely really lets us know exactly what it is that he is up to since Source Code last year. Just lately however he has confirmed that his self penned script for film number three has passed through his rigorous draft and reading process (Duncan has a small group of trusted readers that provide feedback which may lead to updates to the current draft) and has now gone on to the powers that be to check there’s enough in the piggy bank for a new Duncan Jones Sci-Fi that may feature a significantly larger world & cast than his previous feature films MOON (2009) & Source Code (2011).
As well as film number three, we also know that a graphic novel for another Duncan Jones original Sci-Fi tale ‘Mute’ is also on the cards, so that’s two new projects to look forward to, could that be it for now? No, there is another.
Teased by Duncan himself on Twitter this morning (L A time at least) is this…
If I was a betting man, I’d stick with my previous guess at a Western, but I guess we’ll just have to keep following the odd tease and clues over on Duncan’s Twitter feed to find out more.
What would you like to see after ‘Film 3’ (of which we know little) from Duncan? Let us know in the comments below.
SOURCE CODE continues it’s journey around the theatres of the world, appearing just last week as the top new entry in the Netherlands box office chart, and opening this week in Denmark & South Africa, pushing past the already fantastic $100 Million in worldwide Box Office takings (now at around $112 million).
Meanwhile, back in LA, it seems Director Duncan Jones is already hard at work on film number three, and has just announced things are moving along nicely, last night on the Twitter:
“Lots of fun today! Met with a few special effects companies and some very talented concept artists. I feel a movie coming on! 😉
Still a long way to go, but very happy so far. :)” Continue reading Duncan Jones Feels A New Movie Coming On
