Duncan Jones presented a MOON & Source Code double bill at the New Beverley Cinema, Los Angeles on the 18th & 19th of November, featuring an introduction of each film, and a Q&A with Duncan and his producer Stuart Fenegan, hosted by Julia Marchese. What the audience on the 18th were not aware of, was the surprise appearance of Sam Bell himself, Sam Rockwell.
For those of us unable to attend, I found a few snippets of the Q&A, and was putting together a post for you to get a flavour of the event. Then I found this…
Some fantastic insight into the process of making MOON there, and also some hints towards where Duncan & Stuart are heading with what sounds like a Sci-Fi trilogy of ‘Mute’ ‘MOON’ and ‘…’ (that’s the last title we managed to get out of Duncan for film three)
As you may have caught Duncan mention there in the Q&A, Julia at the New Beverly is supporting a campaign to fight for the survival of 35mm film projection in cinemas, please take a moment to read Julia’s post, and sign the petition here.
Well here’s one we hadn’t heard of. Seems you people lucky enough to live in Germany can get a MOON / Source Code Blu-Ray Steel Book from STUDIOCANAL. And not just any steelbook, not a Limited Edition, not a Special Edition. A ‘Duncan Jones Edition’ no less!
Author Joe Hill thinks there’s something kind of cool about having the Moon rise over his staircase, in fact that’s nearly exactly what he said on Twitter earlier to MOON Director, Duncan Jones.
Joe tweeted the beautifully framed poster to Duncan after hanging it over his staircase. Duncan for his part, was truly honoured. And who wouldn’t be honoured to receive such recognition from the incredibly popular author of 20th Century Ghosts, Heart-Shaped Box, Horns, and comic book series Locke & Key.
Of course mounting such a valuable piece of work can be a risky, and dangerous business, but Joe has assured everyone:
(Note: no lunar objects were damaged in the hanging of the aforementioned movie poster)
As Michael Palin would say, if he were hanging from a cell wall right now, talking to anyone in LA, or the surrounding area “You lucky, lucky…” you know the rest
And he’d be right, because situated on 7165 West Beverly Blvd,Los Angeles, CA. The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles will be hosting a double bill of MOON & Source Code on Friday the 18th, and Saturday the 19th November. That’s two double bills of critically acclaimed, award winning Sci-Fi. Not only that, but the Director of both films, Duncan Jones, will be there in person as well, on both nights!
So get yourselves over to the New Beverly site, get in touch, and get those tickets before they’re all gone! Have fun!
During the busy promotional tour for Source Code this year, Duncan popped into the Empire Magazine offices in London to take part in an online web chat during which sergithegreek asked:
Hi Duncan! What helpful and inspiring guidance can you offer a young filmmaker / writer who is almost near the end of his TV & Film degree?
To which Duncan replied:
Gather a group of like-minded people around you, find people who want to be producers, cinematographers, actors and composers, because you’re always going to have far more ability to get things made if you have the momentum of a group of people working together. It’s hard work trying to do it on your own, and you’ll be taken more seriously if there’s a group of you.
This advice rang a few bells with a group of young film makers in Melbourne, Australia, who were in the process of going about setting up just such a group themselves, Duncan’s web chat answer was inspiring enough by itself, but imagine how much more inspiring it would be if a BAFTA award winning director of two critically acclaimed feature films took time to Skype into your group to offer further advice… Continue reading →
As soon as Apple introduced their latest voice recognition system Siri for iOS 5 yesterday, it drew immediate comparisons with the AI assistants present in Sci-Fi films.
HAL from Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey‘ was an obvious one, with some commenting that each request to the new iPhone 4S could be greeted with “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
But by far the most popular request I noticed, was to get Kevin Spacey to voice Siri, reprising his role as GERTY from Duncan Jones’ MOON. What would it look like? What would he say? You don’t have to wait too long on the internet to find out, we just got this brilliant mock up from Twitter friend @morguendor
Great news for everyone in Brazil that have been waiting so long to see Duncan Jones’ Source Code. Twitter friend Emerson Medina has been in touch to let us know that Source Code will be released on September 30th under the title ‘Contra o Tempo’ (Against Time)
Since the release of MOON in 2009, there has been the odd request for a MOON merchandise. Unfortunately, there is no official merchandise available at the moment.
No official t-shirts, posters, badges, patches, mugs, robotic assistants, flowbees or sealed bags of beans exist. We occasionally manage to find some promotional bits & bobs to send out to competitions winners, or auction off for charity. But nothing you can actually order online, or go buy from a shop.
There’s a CHANCE we may finally get to sell Moon posters & Collectors toys.
Basically we need to show there are at least 500 fans out there who would buy a Gerty desktop toy or a collectors Sam piece.
So, we’d like to get an idea of how many of you would be interested in buying some MOON gear, and what you’d like to be able to buy if it were possible. Please complete the poll below, and leave a comment, because I’ll be doing a random draw on the comments on Friday 16th at 23:00, and sending the winner a MOON promo T-Shirt (S/M or L) and a set of 4 MOON patches.
Many thanks in advance, I’m sure there are at least 10 of you out there, hopefully more
MOON continues to inspire others to create, and we are always more than happy to share those creations with you. Just last night, Cardiff band Caesers Rome got in touch with MOON Director Duncan Jones to let him know they had just released the video for their debut single ‘Earth From Space’ which has been directly influenced musically, and visually by Duncan’s 2009 debut feature… Continue reading →
