WARCRAFT Movie LogoFilming completed earlier this year on 23rd of May so the gang are well into post production and were even able to offer an exclusive glimpse of WARCRAFT to attendees of San Diego Comic-Con back in July. That footage is still tightly under wraps but you can read a description of what was screened over on JoBlo. So will the teased surprises include new footage that the rest of us will get to see? We’ll have to wait and see what occurs on the 7th November…

If you’re unable to attend BlizzCon 2014 and want to get all the info on World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, Diablo & StarCraft as well as that one hour WARCRAFT movie panel with Chris Metzen & Duncan Jones, you can pick up a virtual ticket and watch over 60 hours of convention footage streamed live to your desktop.

WARCRAFT is scheduled for release March 11th 2016.

Duncan Jones On The Cutting Edge As Warcraft Filming Approaches Completion

World of Warcraft - Warlords of Draenor

After a lengthy shooting schedule in Vancouver that started in January 2014, Duncan Jones recently began a countdown to the wrap on the big screen adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s incredibly successful MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) World of Warcraft currently titled WARCRAFT.

Duncan’s last update via Twitter on May 1st 2014 told us:

Which gives us a wrap date of Friday 23rd May 2014, 123 days or 4 months and 3 days since filming began on January 20th 2014. Just a wee bit longer than previous shoots on MOON and Source Code which came in at around 30-35 days. With a release date of March 11th 2016, the gang have plenty of time to polish WARCRAFT in post production, around 21 months. Speaking to Fred Topel for Craveonline, Legendary Pictures’ CEO Thomas Tull explained that time will be used for:

“Well, part of it is getting the date right. As you may have noticed, these next two years, there’s pretty big titles coming out. We wanted to make sure that we got that right, but there are some sequences and some things that Duncan Jones has done that are truly on the cutting edge. You want to have plenty of time to make sure that we dial those in. So by the time they get home and set up, it’ll be a little less than two years. It’ll be about 20 months but we really want to take our time and get this right because the technology that’s employed really is some next generation stuff.”

We still know very little about WARCRAFT, the gang have done an incredible job on keeping a lid on things during filming, Fred did manage to pry a wee bit of info out of Tull though when asked what Duncan brings to the film considering his previous films MOON and Source Code:

“I would say it’s a linear story, but at the same time, it’s Duncan Jones. That’s what we wanted, was again that different flare, not just straightforward fantasy and everything. Look, it’s a privilege. Being able to go from Interstellar’s our fifth movie with Chris Nolan into Guillermo del Toro and Gareth Edwards and now Duncan Jones. It’s really a privilege to work around these folks.”

There is very much a sense that Duncan and the team are creating something rather special, indeed he said as much in a recent piece he wrote for Empire magazine’s 300th issue this month:

“We’re doing something that doesn’t happen in Hollywood movies anymore. We’re creating a great, big, grin inducing surprise! And for that reason, I don’t want to tell you too much…”

WARCRAFT will be released March 11th 2016, keep up to date with the countdown to wrap on Duncan’s Twitter feed, and pick up a copy of Empire magazine’s 300th issue for a great piece by Duncan with a couple of exclusive photos from on set by Rodene Jones.

Bill Westenhofer Is Duncan Jones’ A-Team & WARCRAFT VFX Editor

Bill Westenhofer A-Team

Responding to an enquiry from a twitter follower yesterday, WARCRAFT Director Duncan Jones called multiple award winning VFX Director Bill Westenhofer his “A-Team”

— Duncan Jones (@ManMadeMoon) May 10, 2013

The A-Team reference not only refers to Bill’s wide ranging skill set, but also to his role as visual effects supervisor on the 2010 feature film based on the successful 1980’s TV series. The news of Bill being appointed VFX Director on the long anticipated WARCRAFT feature film was broken on Twitter late last month by Nick Carpenter, Blizzard’s vice president of art and cinematic development.

— Nick Carpenter (@FubarNick) April 26, 2013

This is obviously great news for everyone looking forward to the cinematic realisation of the World of Warcraft. Bill has a wealth of VFX experience at the highest level and was recently the winner of both BAFTA (Special Visual Effects) and Academy Award (Best Visual Effects) for his work on Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. Bill also achieved the same reward for his work on The Golden Compass (2007), and was nominated in 2005 for his work on The Chronicles of Narina: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

As pre-production work starts to ramp up on WARCRAFT, hopefully this is the first of some regular news. We know Duncan is having a blast working with the team at Blizzard Entertainment, and we look forward to bringing you new developments soon 😉

Since the announcement of Duncan Jones as Director of the much anticipated feature film adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft, any further news has been thin on the ground. If you follow Duncan on Twitter you’ll know he is enjoying getting stuck in immensely, even inventing a new word for the process… Continue reading WARCRAFT: Field General Duncan Jones

WoW! World Of Warcraft Gets It’s Director – DUNCAN JONES!

Blizzard - World Of Warcraft

Back in December 2010 Duncan Jones spoke to Devin Faraci at Badass Digest and eventually got on to the subject of video games and their adaptation to film, and what game would best make the transition to the big screen. At the time Sam Raimi was in the hot seat to direct World of Warcraft, something that brought the green eyed monster out in Duncan:

“I’m hugely jealous of Sam Raimi, I really believe World of Warcraft could be the launch of computer games as good films. And from the little I’ve read of interviews with him the way he’s approaching it makes so much sense. It’s what I was talking about – it’s not worrying about how the game plays, it’s about creating the world of the game and investing the audience in that world.”

Well things change, and Sam Raimi moved on to the soon to be released The Great and Mighty Oz, and the film adaptation of Blizzard’s incredibly successful MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) has been looking for a director, until now…

Exclusively broken just now over on The Hollywood Reporter, it has been announced that our old pal Duncan Jones (MOON, Source Code) will be heading off to Azeroth later this year as Director of ‘Warcraft’ with Legendary Pictures (Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel) and Blizzard Entertainment.

This is a MASSIVE step up for Duncan who will be accompanied by long time producer Stuart Fenegan, and well deserved after the success of MOON (2009) and Source Code (2011). Being just a bit of a hard core gamer I think we can safely say he will do all you Warcraft fans proud, while at the same time creating a magical, living breathing world for us all to travel to, and experience fantastic adventures in. Confirming his acceptance of the challenge on Twitter just now, Duncan said:

So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game.  Ive always said its possible.  Got to DO it now! 😉

Congratulations Mr. Jones! I’m sure this is all going to be a LOT of fun 🙂 There is one burning question though, and I will leave it to Bill Mudron to ask:

Good luck to @ManMadeMoon in his attempt to find a way to work a Chesney Hawkes song into the Warcraft movie!

I’m just firing up WoW to have a wee mooch about, see ya later 😉
