MOON / Source Code Director Duncan Jones announced last year that after difficulties with acquiring funding for MUTE, the previously planned follow up to MOON, that he would be going ahead with a graphic novel version of his love letter to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Talking to James Wallace over at Gordon & The Whale in March 2011, Duncan said:

“…we’ve had so many problems trying to get this film made, you know? The people who are involved with financing films have just been…shy…shy of making the script. So what we decided to do is we’re going to make a graphic novel of it, prove it…prove it to an audience that this works and maybe in the future get the chance to come back and make it.”

It seems work has continued since then and Duncan teased on Twitter recently:

And it seems it’s not just artwork that has him excited, as last night he let everyone know how he feels about the process of transferring a script to graphic novel format:

Is the artwork for the Mute graphic novel? Is the script conversion to the graphic novel format for Mute also? Everything would seem to point to that being the case, but as usual Duncan is playing his cards close to his chest, although recent tweets suggest Poker may not be his strong point.

Whatever the answer, it’s certainly a busy and creative time for Duncan and his producer Stuart Fenegan over in L A as they also recently announced their involvement in the upcoming biopic of James Bond creator Ian Fleming, and we also know there is another Sci-Fi feature in the works as well. Let’s hope the financing is not dependant upon Duncan’s skills in the casinos of Las Vegas though, eh? 😉

For more details on Mute, have a read of this io9 interview on that very subject from June 2009.

Duncan Jones Feels A New Movie Coming On

SOURCE CODE continues it’s journey around the theatres of the world, appearing just last week as the top new entry in the Netherlands box office chart, and opening this week in Denmark & South Africa, pushing past the already fantastic $100 Million in worldwide Box Office takings (now at around $112 million).

Meanwhile, back in LA, it seems Director Duncan Jones is already hard at work on film number three, and has just announced things are moving along nicely, last night on the Twitter:

“Lots of fun today! Met with a few special effects companies and some very talented concept artists. I feel a movie coming on! 😉

Still a long way to go, but very happy so far. :)” Continue reading Duncan Jones Feels A New Movie Coming On

James Wallace over at Gordon & The Whale sat down with Duncan Jones today at the beginning of the press tour for ‘Source Code’ where Duncan revealed some exclusive details about what the future holds.

The MOON and ‘Source Code‘ Director is currently completing a treatment for his third feature, and revealed that it will not be MUTE, the long anticipated Jones penned follow up to MOON. In fact, Duncan confirmed Mute will be produced as a graphic novel!

Not MUTE, no. Although, I can sort of tell you that I’ve been talking to my producer today and we have decided that we’re going to release MUTE as a graphic novel. Because we’ve had so many problems trying to get this film made, you know? The people who are involved with financing films have just been…shy…shy of making the script. So what we decided to do is we’re going to make a graphic novel of it, prove it…prove it to an audience that this works and maybe in the future get the chance to come back and make it.

Personally, as much as I’d love to see MUTE on the big screen, I also love the idea of a graphic novel, or even a motion comic, was very impressed recently with the Watchmen motion comic, retaining the art of the graphic novel format, adding minor animation and audio narrative, done in the right way (i.e. using female voice actors for female characters), could be an even better tool to attract investment for a full on feature production.

Duncan also revealed further details about the prospective third feature, so if you want to find out more, head over to Gordon and The Whale now!

Mute: Fan Made Teaser Poster

Some incredibly talented people out there, including Lloyd Stas, who has produced this very nice, unofficial teaser poster for Duncan Jones ‘Mute

Mute by Lloyd Stas‘Mute’ status is currently in development, and is one of a number of potential next projects for Duncan after his next feature release ‘Source Code

Check out the rest of Lloyd’s Flickr photostream as well, good stuff 🙂

The Future for Oddball Jones – No Escaping from the Deep

Escape From The Deep - Alex KershawWhatever the future holds for Duncan Jones after ‘Source Code‘, it is certainly not going to be at the helm of the movie adaptation of Alex Kershaw’s book ‘Escape From The Deep

Confirmed on twitter in conversation with Collider writer, Jake Lasker, Duncan confirmed that he will not be Directing “..the sub movie” after Jake enquired dying to hear about Mute…when will we get info? Or is the sub movie next?” to which Duncan repliednot on the sub movie anymore, but trying hard to get one of two things made next. Mute is one of those 2

Now we are all obviously interested in news on any developments with ‘Mute‘ being the next anticipated original material from Mr.Jones, being described in the past as his love letter to Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s ‘Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep’, ‘Blade Runner‘.

Set in the same fictional universe as Jones’ 2009 debut feature ‘MOON‘ and also set to feature a cameo by Sam Rockwell, returning as Sam Bell to offer maybe a small epilogue to his story in ‘MOON’. But now we also have a new, mystery movie added to the mix as well, with not a hint of what it might be…

Anyway, before we get carried away with what might be, we definitely have ‘Source Code‘ to look forward to. As announced recently, ‘Source Code‘ will open, and receive it’s world premier, at the 2011 SXSW South By Southeast Film Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas.

The question is, what is an up and coming Director to wear? What kind of entrance to make to maximise the publicity opportunities? Piecing together the clues (reading Duncan’s tweets) I believe we can look forward to the first, public appearance of Oddball Jones, rolling up to the ‘Source Code’ Premier in a Sherman, baby 😉

Duncan Jones is...Oddball Jones

Philip K Dick ‘Blade Runner’ Letter Makes Jones ‘Mute’

Moon Director Duncan Jones has been bowled over by the content of a letter written by Sci-Fi author Philip K Dick to the ‘Blade Runner‘ film production company in 1981.

Philip K Dick typewriter & mug

It’s always interesting to discover what an author thinks of a movie adaptation of his work (in this case ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’), but PKD goes further than providing a simple critique of the Ridley Scott directed movie, he actually takes the opportunity to make a statement on the current (then) state of the Sci-Fi genre as a whole, and what Blade Runner has done to point the way out of a seemingly stale situation, at the same time remaining humble with regards his own role in one of the greatest movies of all time. Read the letter >>HERE<<

Distributing the link to the letter from his Twitter account Jones says:

Anyone read that beautiful letter Philip K Dick wrote the production team of Blade Runner after he saw the first few shots? Amazing stuff!”

in the long run, i think he has been right about even the business success of the film”

He said BR wasnt sci-fi.. it was “Futurism!” Love it…”

so much of that letter is even more relevant today”

his comments on the staleness and inbreadness of sci-fi seem as relevant today as then though, dont you think?”

When asked by @davymacBeautiful letter from PKD. Also, would you consider another ‘Futurism’ movie yourself?”
Jones responded “part of the reason i love that letter so much is that Mute kind of is.”

Enjoy the letter, and hopefully we will be hearing much more on ‘Mute’ in the near future.

Mute: First Look at Mute Concept art

Liberty Films 'Mute' concept art 1

Liberty Films have revealed the first details of what we hope will be Moon Director Duncan Jones’ next movie ‘Mute’.

First piece of concept art above features a street scene from a futuristic Berlin.

Who is the chap on the left? Who is the young lady he appears to be talking to? Who is the white shirted chap being escorted from the ‘Fremde’ (German word, translation Outsider / Alien / Strangers) nightclub into awaiting hover car? Hopefully we will know more soon….
