Here’s Duncan with the details…

Win A Poster Signed By Duncan Jones To Celebrate MOON’s 5th Birthday

Today we are celebrating the 5th Birthday of Duncan Jones’ MOON.

Duncan Jones' MOON - Poster from Dark Horse

Released in the UK on Friday 17th July 2009 MOON has gone on to become a huge critical success both here in the UK and abroad winning many awards beginning with the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film at the 63rd Edinburgh International Film Festival where it also received it’s UK premiere on the 28th June 2009. Among the many awards there was also of course Duncan’s BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Director which led to this rather emotional acceptance speech.

Among sci-fi fans MOON has also gone on to become something of a cult classic joining the ranks of those that inspired it in the first place. Films such as Silent Running, Outland, Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey. MOON was even compared to 2001 by some bloke called Terry Gilliam in Little White Lies (issue 34, p40-41)

“I think MOON is a really brilliant example of contemporary sci-fi because it has a message; it has strong visuals but it also has a proper science fiction core. It’s the closest thing to a modern-day 2001 I have seen”

We know you all love MOON too, that’s one of the reasons why we are here writing this now. The support for MOON since release from you lot has been one of the biggest reasons for it’s continued success on DVD / Blu-Ray and cinema screenings that have continued since release. To celebrate MOON’s 5th Birthday Duncan Jones has sent us some rather lovely signed MOON posters to give away to a few lucky fans. You may recall these became available back in November 2012 when the limited signed run sold out very quickly. Well, we have three to give away, and three different ways to win one

TWITTER

Duncan joined Twitter when we were all just figuring out how it all worked to help promote MOON as it approached release in 2009. So for all you lot that got on board then and since simply retweet this and we will choose one winner at 00:01 GMT on Sunday 20th July who will receive a MOON poster signed by Duncan Jones.

FACEBOOK

Not everyone uses Twitter, we have a great gang over on our Facebook page too, so for you lot please head over and like & share this post to be in with a chance of winning. Again, we will choose one winner at 00:01 GMT on Sunday 20th July who will receive a MOON poster signed by Duncan Jones.

PHOTO COMP 🙂

Those of you that have been around since those early Twitter days back in 2009 may recall Duncan held a series of competitions in the run up to the release of MOON. One of these produced some marvelous results, so we’re going to repeat it for another chance to win a signed MOON poster.

Re-create a sci-fi moment from film or television, take a photo and email:

To: unklerupert@manmademovies.co.uk

Subject line: Happy 5th Birthday MOON

If you’re on Twitter you can tweet it over to @ManMadeMovies using the hashtag #Happy5thBirthdayMOON. We’ll give you a bit longer for this one to ensure we get the good stuff 😉 We will choose one winner who will receive a MOON poster signed by Duncan Jones at 00:01 GMT on Sunday 27th July.

Entry open to all on Earth and any beyond, should they wish to establish contact with humanity through an online competition.

Thanks to everyone that has supported MOON and Duncan over the last 5 years through MOON, SOURCE CODE and the upcoming WARCRAFT. We look forward to continuing to bring you news and all that over years to come. Good luck! 🙂

Studio Sheila Creates Wonderful Sam Bell Print

We were very impressed with this drawing of Sam Bell tweeted to MOON Director Duncan Jones last week, so much so we had to get in touch with Sheila and find out more about it.

Mooned - Sam Bell by Studio SheilaIf you pop over to Studio Sheila you’ll see pop culture, movies and myths provide the main inspiration for her work, we asked Sheila to tell us a bit more about her work and how MOON inspired her in particular.

“Being that I love movies, I like the idea of drawing something from a movie that sticks with me.  That something could be a specific actor’s performance or a scene that’s deeply moving, bizarre, scary, or just plain funny, and basically “freezing” it on paper.

As far as what medium I use, I work in pencil, ink, charcoal, and sometimes watercolor.

Regarding Moon, I’d been curious about it for a while and finally bought it.  Since the movie stayed with me for a long time after I watched it, I wanted to draw something Moon-related.  Without giving anything away in the movie, I wanted to show the various character traits of Sam Bell, which includes humor, too.

And I wanted to incorporate Gerty the robot, too.  Gerty is a character that provides some relief for the viewer, I think, because you empathize with Sam’s loneliness and want him to have some kind of company.  I think it puts the viewer more at ease to see him with Gerty.   But Gerty is also a dark character in that it’s only trying to comfort Sam because it’s been programmed to do so.

I’m not an actor and far from an authority on acting or film-making, but I feel that Sam is one of those actors who has no vanity with his performances and that’s what makes his acting so strong.  What I mean “no vanity” is that he’s not afraid to appear very raw in roles.  It hits you in your gut.  And he’s primarily alone in this eerie and haunting movie so the film hinges on whether the actor can pull it off or not.  I think it needed a really strong actor like Sam to do it justice.  That’s the kind of actor that makes for a great drawing subject, too.

Plus, is there a person around who doesn’t like Sam Rockwell’s acting?  I haven’t found one yet.  It’s Sam Rockwell, people!”

It’s a bloody lovely piece of work, and one that you could own too if you like?

Competition closed, CONGRATULATIONS TO Chris Hager 🙂

To win a copy of ‘Mooned’ by Studio Sheila just drop us a mail with the answer to the following question.

Sam Bell is quite an accomplished artist too, what artistic hobby does Sam use to pass the time during his time on the Sarang MOON base?

Answers to: unklerupert@manmademovies.co.uk
Subject line: Studio Sheila MOON Competition

One entry per person please.
Prize for the winner is one 14″ x 20″ print of ‘Mooned’ by Studio Sheila.
Closing date for entries Friday 27th June. Good luck! 🙂

Want a MUTE Print Signed by Duncan Jones?

Duncan Jones served a double whammy after sneaking into San Diego Comic-Con last month dressed as a luchador. Presenting not only a surprise teaser for his next film WARCRAFT, but also announcing a graphic novel of the long anticipated MUTE in collaboration with award winning British comic artist Glenn Fabry and Dark Horse Comics.

Those attending SDCC were not only present to hear the news, but were also able to pick up a print of two pages from MUTE at a signing session with Duncan. We all gazed on enviously, I pleaded with Duncan to slip a few down his kecks (trousers for you lot not from around these parts) and…he bloody well did!

I’d be happy to hoard them away, but Duncan has gone and squiggled all over them, so I’m going to give some to…maybe YOU!

COMPETITION: Stand Up To Win $126.00 & More…

Russell Peters accepts Jake Jake Gyllenhaal's challenge in Source Code

It’s been bloomin’ yonks since we had a competition here, so Duncan has come up with one that harks back to the great MOON competitions he did back in the olden times (ok 2009).

In the still image from Source Code above, you can see Max Denoff (Russell Peters) accepting Colter Stevens’ (Jake Gyllenhaal) challenge to make all the people on their train laugh. Duncan’s challenge to you is…

Perform a stand up comedy routine on a train in front of all the passengers and get a friend to film it. Upload the video evidence to youtube, vimeo etc and send us a link to prove you did it. We’ll compile them all into a blog post and have a public vote. The one with the most votes wins.

Just like Max the winner will receive $126.00 in cash from Source Code Director Duncan Jones, and some other nice bits & bobs Duncan will pop together to make it all worth your while 🙂

Sounds simple, but have you got the bottle? Eh?…

Tweet links of your video evidence to Duncan @ManMadeMoon using hashtag #SourceCodeStandUp or e-mail a link to me here unklerupert@manmademovies.co.uk.

We’ll set an end date when we get a few in so you know what your up against.

Good luck, and have fun!

UPDATE!!

Seems @crimsong19 wants to do his “routine” on an Ox & Cart, so we’re opening this up to any form of mass transport. Now warm up, gargle, La La La Laaaaaaaaa, and GET OUT THERE!

Poll: Would You Like To Be Able To Buy MOON Merchandise?

Since the release of MOON in 2009, there has been the odd request for a MOON merchandise. Unfortunately, there is no official merchandise available at the moment.

No official t-shirts, posters, badges, patches, mugs, robotic assistants, flowbees or sealed bags of beans exist. We occasionally manage to find some promotional bits & bobs to send out to competitions winners, or auction off for charity. But nothing you can actually order online, or go buy from a shop.

BUT WAIT! For MOON Director Duncan Jones has just told this:

There’s a CHANCE we may finally get to sell Moon posters & Collectors toys.

Basically we need to show there are at least 500 fans out there who would buy a Gerty desktop toy or a collectors Sam piece. 🙂

So, we’d like to get an idea of how many of you would be interested in buying some MOON gear, and what you’d like to be able to buy if it were possible. Please complete the poll below, and leave a comment, because I’ll be doing a random draw on the comments on Friday 16th at 23:00, and sending the winner a MOON promo T-Shirt (S/M or L) and a set of 4 MOON patches.

Many thanks in advance, I’m sure there are at least 10 of you out there, hopefully more 😉

Source Code: Win SFX Magazine Drawn All Over By Duncan Jones

Duncan Jones - Signed SFX Magazine April 2011I’m really sorry about this, but we somehow managed to allow MOON & SOURCE CODE Director Duncan Jones to doodle all over this picture of him, featured in the latest (June 2011) Issue of SFX Magazine.

So not only does the magazine make the noise of Doctor Who’s TARDIS when opened (true), but is also now forever marked by a British film Director.

Not sure, taking these facts into account, that it can remain here any longer, so it’s probably for the best, that it is sent to YOU.

As you may be aware, Duncan is a computer gaming demon (see above) and regularly talks gaming over on the old Twitter. This being the case, gaming related questions, will lead you to the prize. Answer these two questions correctly, and mail your answers to unklerupert (at) manmademovies.co.uk with Subject line ‘MMM SFX Competition

1. Name the game that aids Duncan on his trip to Rome. Duncan & Rodene’s SOURCE CODE promotional tour blog will help you with that one.

2. There’s a grand game that Duncan has mentioned in reference to one of the best effects shots in SOURCE CODE, name that game (let google be your guide).

  • Competition is open until Friday 22nd April 23:59 GMT
  • Competition is open to anyone in the world that wants to enter
  • Signed and doodled SFX Magazine will be posted after I’ve checked my pocket money to make sure I have enough for the stamps (by recorded delivery).

If you can’t wait until then, SFX is on sale now, featuring an article where SFX pick Duncan’s brain on his influences. Good luck! 😉
